The Bay Area Store of Shenzhen Book City, dubbed as “Eyes of the GBA,”opened to the public in Qianhai today.
Said to be the world's largest physical bookstore, the next-generation complex boasts a colossal floor space of 131,000 square meters, combining reading spaces with art, technology, exhibitions, performances, and tourism.
Operated by Shenzhen Publishing Group, it is designed to be a premier cultural landmark for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
From an aerial view, the bookstore and an adjacent folk customs museum form two cylindrical structures that resemble jade dishes.
The opening features several inaugural events, including a Tang Dynasty mural exhibition in partnership with the Shaanxi History Museum, an immersive virtual reality experience based on the science fiction series “The Three-Body Problem,” and a technology exhibit showcasing products from companies like Huawei and BYD.
Highlights and activities
The complex will include several innovative attractions. Its themed reading spaces, designed by an international art team, feature panoramic windows and specialized areas including a retro study and children's zone.
The theater space, developed together with ACOrange Group, is an interactive space centered around intellectual properties under China Literature Limited. There is also a robot display center.
The Storyland zone offers an immersive reading experience for children and juveniles.
From today through Oct. 8, the venue will host several major themed events.
7-10 p.m, Sept. 26
Several famous authors, inclduing Li Jingze, Zhou Guoping, A Lai, Yang Hongying, and Zhang Xiaoxian, will gather for a reading sharing session.
3:30-4:30 p.m, Sept. 27
Author Zhang Xiaoxian will be present for a new book sharing and signing session.
3-4 p.m, Oct. 4
Lei Jia will attend "The Poetry of Time — A Talk on Classical Chinese Poetry."
